If you put the word abstract into a thesaurus some of the synonyms it will produce are as follows: theoretical; conceptual; intangible, while one of its numerous antonyms is ‘simple’. The word is suggestive therefore of something evasive, difficult, not easily grasped
There is a way to “read” an abstract painting, just as there is to understand and interpret a more realistic painting. The history and progression of art through the ages illuminates the contemporary scene and provides a solid background from which to immerse yourself in seemingly incomprehensible works.
As abstraction becomes more pronounced, the typical viewer may have trouble discerning the subject of the picture. Abstract artists alter colors, distort the representation of three-dimensional space, simplify forms and disregard the rules of perspective; all of these techniques, when practiced to the extreme, tend to make their subjects unrecognizable to viewers accustomed to pictures that try to mimic reality
